Requesting a W-9 from Moonlight

If you have paid money through the Moonlight platform, you may need Moonlight’s W-9 for your records.

Written by Philip Thomas

When to Request a W-9

  • The W-9 is a standard IRS form used to collect a business’s taxpayer identification number.

  • Because payments on Moonlight are made to Moonlight (and then distributed to developers), companies do not issue 1099s to developers directly.

  • Instead, you may need Moonlight’s W-9 for your bookkeeping or compliance purposes.

How to Get a W-9

  • Email team@moonlightwork.com or hit the button below to request a completed W-9 form.

  • We will provide the signed form promptly for your records.

FAQs

Why don’t I issue a 1099 to the developer?

Because you are paying Moonlight, not the developer directly. Moonlight (via Stripe) is responsible for issuing the relevant tax reporting forms.

What if my accountant still asks for a W-9?

Provide Moonlight’s W-9 instead of requesting one from the developer.

Will I ever need to file a 1099 for work done through Moonlight?

No. All payments must be processed through the platform, and Moonlight/Stripe handles reporting to the IRS.
